About Human AI Performance
Human-AI Performance is an independent research-to-practice project by Lauren A Kelly.
It is organised around one question:
What makes human-AI work perform well in practice?
The project uses published research, practitioner knowledge and work in real settings to develop methods people can use.
Where it began
Human-AI Performance began with AI adoption.
Organisations were giving people access to AI, training them to use it and still seeing patchy use in everyday work.
The first phase of the project looked at the behaviour behind that. It produced an adoption diagnostic, five areas of support, practical methods and a set of recurring patterns.
That work remains available as AI Adoption.
Where the work is now
The adoption work led to a wider set of questions about the work itself.
People can use AI regularly and still end up with a poor arrangement.
A person may check everything the AI produces. An important judgement may disappear because nobody is clearly responsible for making it. A process may become faster while creating more work somewhere else.
The current Human-AI Performance work looks at how people and AI contribute to one piece of work and what happens when that arrangement is used in practice.
The Human-AI Performance Field Guide sets out the current method.
Research to practice
The method is still developing.
Some parts draw on established research. Some come from practitioner knowledge and observed work. Others are propositions that need more testing.
Human-AI Performance keeps those differences visible as the work develops.
The aim is to build a useful body of methods, evidence and observed patterns around human-AI work.
Lauren A Kelly
Lauren A Kelly is a behavioural designer, strategist and educator.
Her work looks at what happens when plans, products and technologies depend on people doing something differently in practice.
She created Human-AI Performance through client work and ongoing independent research.
